Halloween in June

I have been realizing lately that another reason I enjoy the whole blog thing is because artwork can be much more interesting when you read the stories behind the creative process involved. This is another piece from the Mordacious vault- this one is probably 7 or 8 years old. I opened a studio around that time in Orem, Utah called "High Voltage Studio", which was intended to be more of a cartooning school than anything. I was getting a pretty decent group of students going, and it was a ton of fun, but it certainly wasn't making me much money. I decided it was probably wise to close the studio and continue the teaching but this time out of my own home. I had a very dedicated group of hotshot artists that stayed with me for many years- it was a great learning experience for me as well as for them. This Halloween cartoon was started as part of one of my lessons, regarding creating a character's head from basic shapes. A capsule was the shape I was demonstrating here. I liked the faces well enough to spend a few more hours finishing this one up after the class was over. I was also working as an ad designer for a local newspaper, and this artwork ended up on the front page of their Halloween edition that year. The scan here is not very good, this is one of those pieces that definitely looks better live than scanned, but I wanted to share it with my fellow monster lovers anyway. Drawn with a number 2 pencil, and colored with a set of those really hard Crayola colored pencils. Where were my Prismacolors???

Great web blog, I too love the monsters, can't wait to draw them... I respect the monsters, they do deserve it. If we show people our monsters and they don't run, we're good. :-)))

You should make cards of this image and sell them on your site. I'd buy a pack to send out.

Prismacolors or not. You did a great job with this. I like the shape concept.

I agree. The card idea would be cool.
